It is about bridging the gap. Now, what is this gap all about? Is it the struggle between geocentric and heliocentric theorists? Well, not in this era. That mystery has been long sorted out. Galileo and Copernicus struggled to communicate to counter the then beliefs of the Roman men & the church in that era. At last it got communicated! Earth is no longer in the centre of the universe now (as if it was earlier, isn’t it?). In the same way, for the common man, sun rises in the East. For an astronomer, the part where the sun rises has been named by someone as the East. Is this a subtle difference of words or a gross difference of ideas?
Well, science goes through a constant struggle regarding its reach out to the public. So, communicating science effectively has paramount importance in this age of rapid advancement in science. Do science professionals actively engage in the dissemination of their ideas and findings? Do they need to? Is it their job? Are we turning into journalists? What is science journalism?
Many questions, huh? Let us see what Ms. Aditi Subramaniam has to say about this. I am looking forward to listening to the talk – “Communicating science effectively” at 5:00 pm today at the Neurobiology Research Centre, NIMHANS.
