Research Interests
I completed my MBBS at CSMMU, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It was during my graduation that I got interested in Psychiatry. During internship, the brief 2 weeks posting in Psychiatry was a decisive experience and I decided to pursue it for my post-graduation. I have never found a suitable answer for why I chose Psychiatry. My best guess is that it must have been a combination of certain personal experiences and a sense of fascination that ‘understanding human behavior’ brings in. My interest in research was triggered after I joined MD in Psychiatry, at NIMHANS. For my post graduate thesis I looked at the association between metabolic side-effects and treatment response with antipsychotics, this study being a first time examination of this association in a prospective design. While this was my prominent research engagement during MD, I was also involved in neuroimaging studies in schizophrenia wherein I examined entorhinal cortex volumes in schizophrenia subjects, using structural MRI.
After MD, I am now pursuing a post-doctoral fellowship in Obsessive-compulsive disorder and related disorders. As part of this 1-year programme, I will gain further expertise in this area. I am currently doing a meta-analysis to examine the long-term outcomes in adult OCD patients.
My other research interests include etiological models of psychopathology, neuropsychiatry, childhood OCD and pervasive developmental disorders. I hope to be doing some work in these areas in the future.
Personal Profile
For the greater part of my life I have been engaged in academics. Fortunately for me, I have had opportunity to study and work at some of the best institutions, right from my school days. That hard work, sincerity, honesty and most importantly an element of fun are vital ingredients of success, is something that is ingrained in me. I believe that professional growth is incomplete till it is able to impact, in any measure, the larger world that one is a part of, and I strive to live up to this.
My other interests include music, literature, poetry and cinema. I have been part of music groups and bands, as a singer, right since school days and even during my MD at NIMHANS. It is a most thrilling experience for me to hold a mike and just sing! I write poems when I find inspiration enough! Literature and movies are always pleasant getaways, giving one an opportunity to break from reality, travel and experience the lives of others.
